Everyone Deserves a Christmas
For too many Canadians, especially during these challenging economic times, the basic necessities of life needed for human dignity are out of reach. The Rose of Durham provides direct, compassionate hands-on service to more than 400 young parents each year, to help restore dignity and hope to those who need it most.
You may not know it, but the holidays are one of the most challenging times for someone living in poverty. Did you know that many people living in poverty during the holidays are forced to choose between buying food and purchasing gifts for their children?
With your help, together we can bring Christmas and the true holiday spirit to families in need so they don’t have to make that choice.
Your family, office or organization can make Christmas brighter by participating in one of Rose of Durham’s Christmas Assistance Programs.
The Rose of Durham staff are always thankful and overwhelmed by the generosity shown to our clients at Christmas. This year we have the following Christmas Assistance Programs for you to consider when deciding how to support the Rose of Durham at Christmas:
Gift Cards and Bus Tickets
We have had clients come into our agency on a number of occasions in the middle of winter without a winter coat or boots, or come in saying their cupboards are bare and they don’t have any money to buy food for their family. Also, the majority of our clients have to walk to our agency to attend our programs because they can’t afford to take public transit. As you can imagine this can be very challenging in the winter or in the rain with children involved. Your donation of grocery store or Walmart gift cards, and/or bus tickets would help a number of our clients immensely with their basic needs.
Here’s how it works: Donated gift cards and bus tickets would be accounted for and set aside to help our clients throughout the year when they come to us in need of food, shoes, diapers, a coat, bus tickets, etc. There is no deadline for this program, as the items are used and needed throughout the year. When providing these items, if you provide an original receipt you are also eligible for a tax receipt. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Deneen Nolte at 905-432-3622 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Sponsor a Family at Christmas
Through our “Sponsor a Family at Christmas” program, you would be helping us provide hampers to families who would normally wake up on Christmas morning with little or nothing under the tree. This program allows you to provide a family in need with a Christmas that they would otherwise not have.
Here’s how it works: We would forward you a wish list from a family in need. You would purchase items from their list and bring the items to us a couple of weeks before Christmas. We would make sure the items are given to our client before Christmas. There is no set dollar amount – every but helps our clients, but the average amount spent is $250. All sponsors are mailed a Christmas card with a personalized thank you directly from the client.
Sponsor a Program
Be a part of our work with young families year round by “Sponsoring a Program” – the gift that keeps on giving. Throughout the year the Rose of Durham offers social groups (that help reduce the barriers to social inclusion and feelings of isolation) and parenting education programs founded in infant mental health – all free of charge. Supplies, healthy snacks, and program materials are costly. Your generosity can help us to continue offering quality programs. When you sponsor a program, you enrich the lives of young families, families that may be vulnerable and need to know that someone is in their corner. To find out more about how to be part of the community that accepts, encourages and empowers young parents.
Shop for a Baby
Your support for our “Shop for Baby” program will allow us to provide layettes for our new parents to celebrate the birth of their baby. The layette consists of new baby items: diapers, wipes, outfits, undershirts, blankets, sleepers, etc. Our clients know that the layette they receive is provided by generous donations from community members who support their commitment to parenting.
Here’s how it works: you could deliver us a complete layette containing all of the items on the list provided including the laundry basket, or you could pick and choose just some of the items on the list. Every bit helps us tremendously! There is no deadline for this program, as the items are used throughout the year.
We thank you for considering participating in the Christmas Assistance Program at Rose of Durham, and we wish you a blessed and Merry Christmas.
